Driver education classes are open to high school students as well as adults. Maine driving permits issued upon course completion. Class consists of 30 classroom hours plus 10 driving hours. Small class size, individual instruction, road test reviews and private lessons. The course fee does not include the check for the Secretary of State in the amount of $35.00. This course is licensed by the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles and is taught by Drivers Edge Driving School. Ear Acupressure Point: An Introduction

Locating this area of the ear, the Shen Men acupressure point, can result in a feeling of relief and a lessening of tension and anxiety. It may also help relieve physical symptoms, such as headaches and sleep problems. Ear acupressure is one tool you can keep in your self care tool bag. Ear acupressure (also called "auricular therapy" or simply "ear treatments") is virtually free and can help you stay healthy. Class members will have the opportunity to view a demonstration of the 5-point NADA Protocol by a Licensed Maine Acupuncturist. Jean volunteers her time for the non-profit organization, The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association, www.acudetox.com.

 

Eggs to Dye For

Decorate eggs with the traditional Ukrainian method (Pysanky) of using beeswax and dye (aka the batik method). Patterns are drawn on the egg with hot beeswax, which then protects the covered areas from the dye that is applied. By repeating this process with different colors of dye, a multi-colored pattern is built up. Finally, the wax is removed to reveal the colors that were covered up at each stage.

 

Fly Fishing: An Introduction

This course is designed to get you solidly grounded in the fundamentals needed to enjoy fly fishing. Topics covered include tackle selection and assembly, knots, fly casting, fish foods, artificial flies, fly fishing strategies, entomology, and wading safety. After completing this course, you should have all the understanding and skills necessary to catch fish with a fly rod on your own. This course will be taught in Orono by Kevin Tracewski, a registered Maine guide and author of the best selling book, A Fisherman’s Guide to Maine.

Please bring a bag lunch/snack and something to drink.

Fly Fishing: Basic Fly Casting

The goal of this course is to provide students with the casting skills necessary to fish effectively on your own. This is a “hands-on” course, so your time will be spent with a fly rod in hand, working on your own casting. Most instruction will be done in small groups, but casting suggestions will also be offered on an individual basis. Videotape analysis of your casting stroke will be provided. We encourage students to use their own fly rod and reel, but equipment will be available for anyone who needs it. Please do not buy new equipment just to take this course. This course will be taught in Orono by Kevin Tracewski, a certified fly casting instructor and author of the best selling book, A Fisherman’s Guide to Maine.

Please bring a bag lunch/snack and something to drink.

Grow Your Own Organic Garden!

Interested in learning how to grow your own vegetables in a sustainable manner? Join us for an evening-long workshop on how to grow your own garden organically. We’ll talk about the basics of soil science and how to enrich your soil to produce healthy, high-yielding plants. Learn the fundamentals of making and using compost, the principles of crop rotation and how to incorporate green manures to manage nutrients in the garden. Other topics include: how to tell the difference between cultivated plants and weeds, basic weed control strategies and cultural methods for dealing with pests. The instructor will be an experienced farmer or gardener from your region. Go home with free seeds! All are welcome.

Ham Radio Course

Licensed amateur (HAM) radio operators can talk with astronauts on the International Space Station, use the latest digital communication modes, bounce signals off of the Moon, and chat with other hams on the other side of the world without having to use the Internet. Even though Morse code is no longer required, many new and seasoned hams still favor that oldest of ham radio modes. Did you know that the amateur radio community even has a fleet of communications satellites in orbit? It is true. The amateur radio service serves as the nation’s backup communications during or after disasters. You can be a part of this service. The Technician Class is the entry level amateur radio license. This course teaches the topics you will need to pass the Technician level examination. At the end of the course an FCC examination session will be held where you can earn your ham radio license upon successful completion. The course text will be the Technician Class 2014-18 FCC Element 2 Radio License Preparation by Gordon West.
